When the United States passed its Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act last month, market analysts knew that it would affect the online casinos industry in a big way. The problem was that nobody knew just how much of an impact this new law would have and how far its effects would be felt in the world. Many felt that the online casinos industry in the United States would feel the pinch and other markets would get the ripple effects. However, this is not the picture we are seeing one month later and many online casinos around the globe are feeling the heat.
Online casinos are now saying that the new US act will, essentially eliminate half the world’s online casinos industry. In monetary terms, that means that an industry that is worth $10-billion is suddenly worth only $5-billion. When we look at it in that light, we see that it is impossible for things to be ‘business-as-usual’ at online casinos around the globe. Online casinos as far away as Australia are reporting on staff dismissals and poor profit results because of the US act.
One of the oldest online casinos, Lasseters from Australia, announced that it is reducing its staff by half, effective almost immediately. More online casinos around the globe are expected to follow suit and it is thought that the industry will take years to recover from this blow.
